Shamshera Movie Story

The leader of the Shamshera tribe lost his life trying to secure freedom for his people. His son rose to a cause 25 years later, avenging his death and freeing his people from the clutches of local and British politicians.

Shamshera Movie Reviews

Shamshera (Ranbir Kapoor), a tribal chief who was expelled from his land along with his people, is forced to plunder the wealth of the rich who consider themselves upper caste. Shudh Singh (Sanjay Dutt), an Indian officer in the British army, betrays Shamshera’s trust and uses her to enslave her tribe. While Shamshera lost her life trying to free her tribe from the grip of the British and upper castes, 25 years later her son Bali (Ranbir again) devoted his life to this rebellion. How he managed to avenge his father’s death and free his tribe forms the crux of the story.

From the first frame, the background music and elegant VFX-driven visuals immerse you in a fictional world set in late 18th century India. After the film, a brief comic-style context is given to tribal roots and why he dives into the story of Shamshera. This is the point where the film slows down. And it remains a slow-moving action drama, with box-driven fights, vengeance with romantic angles, and clashes with the British Raj.

Without going into too much detail about the film, it’s safe to say that you’ll be tired in the end. The film feels too long for its meager story — in fact, it crawls through the runtime with a few minor but technical glitches that can’t be ignored. Nonetheless, Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt remain the lifeblood of this drama. Despite the weak plot and script and dialogue, the actors gave an honest performance. As always, it’s great to see Ranbir return to the screen after a few years, even if he goes to great lengths to brighten up a lackluster story.

So does Sanjay Dutt, who plays a threatening character well. Whenever the actors were on screen together, their exchanges were quite intense. Supporting characters like Ronit Bose Roy, Saurabh Shukla and Iravati Harshe add very little to this drama. It would be helpful if their characters were chosen with more care and attention. It was surprising that they had so little wiggle room. In fact, Vaani Kapoor’s character Sona, who is a dancer, has a pretty short emotional curve.

The action choreography of this film, especially the scene before the break point and the climax, is very well done. This film album contains several songs that will stay with you – such as the ones introducing Bali in the film or the romantic ballads depicting Sona and Bali’s love for each other. The cinematography of the film, background music and VFX are the highlights of this film.

In short, director and co-writer Karan Malhotra certainly had a good vision at first, but the execution seemed to fall short. Given the scope, canvas, and talent of the creators, we just wish they were all better put together than what’s on display.
